Q: Don’t plants have feelings too?

[This is a guilty conscience question. If the meat eater can convince himself that a beetroot suffers as much as a goat, then he might as well carry on eating meat.]

A: No, not the same sort because they don’t have a central nervous system. A bit of the potato planted in the ground is enough to start a new potato growing. A grain seed can start sprouting after years of lying around in your kitchen. Cut off the leg of an animal and not only is it dead but the animal is as hurt as you would be if you were to have your leg cut off.

Q: Don’t you need meat for a proper balanced diet?

A: Ask any doctor, and he will, even if he eats meat himself, tell you that if you give up meat you instantly reduce fat intake, reduce cholesterol and excess iron, lower your blood pressure and reduce your risks for over 160 life threatening diseases like cancer and heart disease. If meat is so necessary, why are most of the world’s top athletes (Carl Lewis, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, for instance) vegetarian?
